A lot of people, myself included, thought that perennial metal masters Novembre had perished when news of this release arrived…
A new band, with Novembre members and a new name, sound and attitude spelled a fresh start for a band that blazed the scene with a duty, care and honour many other bands had a distinct lack of…
It is then, with great smiles and nascent mischief that this band we see before us is not the product of a NOVEMBRE split, rather a product of a hiatus and a break, and a product of wanting to do some different and fresh whilst recharging the NOVEMBRE batteries… A return to the scene with a new name and a more paired down, ironic and fun edge of blue tinged blast beat soaked metal – with AIRLINES OF TERROR.
Opener Disorient Express Sounds like a Primus song distilled through a SLAYER filter, with the chorus of “They are aiming Earthwards- as we fall down skywards” is screaming for a thousand strong audience to beat their chests and singalong in a sweat and beer soaked cavernous arena.
At times it sounds like Matt Parker and Trey Stones metal project DVDA and at other times it is like Slayer grew a sense of humour.
High praise either way you cut it…
For metal and hard rock to truly survive and maintain a relevance it needs to constantly evolve and grow new breadths and widths – That is why when a band release an album like this – heavy and technical and also REALLY FUN it is a shot in the arm for the whole scene and a new relevance is born from it.
Airline Of Terror deserve a great deal of respect and praise for the bravery they show in clearly having a lot of fun with this band – at times the music is so technical you forget how silly and fun the lyrics sound, and at times you are smiling while listening to it the idea of head-banging is not an option – you just want to put your speakers to the window, crank the volume and share the sound of sonic mischief with the rest of humanity.
I cannot speak highly enough of the brilliance of this record and hope that this new found sense of humour and fun in the music continues…
God knows that with the Lamb of God’s and Slayers and Caliban’s out there – Meloncholy has seen its day – lets bring a smile back to the face of hard rock, metal and all the genres it has spawned – with Airlines of Terror running the armies from the front – smelling of beer and smiling like evil child-peeling bastards.
Brilliant. I’m in…
