Apparently Ali Love has been around since 2006, when he released the ominously titled K Hole. However it has only been since the release date of this debut album from Mr Love that his name has actually appeared on my radar. And that is only because, he has been rumoured to be dating tear away actress Mischa Barton. I wonder if she likes his song K Hole?
Either way - thanks to his love life – this album has landed on my desk. And after one listen, I’m happy to let Ali Love slip under my radar again. Mixing 70s disco pop, 80s synth electro and a clear love for Prince; the whole record just sounds like a poor man’s version of the pint sized superstar. Its attempt to emulate the purple one’s formula just comes across as flat and a little bit repetitive. Each track is more forgettable than the other as they all seem to sound so similar. The only redeeming feature is that some of the songs have catchy lyrics, but that is mainly because they are very clichéd. Opener Love Harder, Done the Dirty, Moscow Girl and Smoke and Mirrors are the main culprits of this and some of them have gotten stuck in my head. I’m really struggling here but if you’re fond of the likes of Chromeo; this might float your boat.
