Borrowing a couple of talented musical mates, the Beastie Boys take up their instruments and put down their microphones, to create what I would call a little bit of a masterpiece. Expecting a well executed but slightly cringy comical set of raps as is their usual, amusing style, I am greeted with no less than twelve fully instrumental tracks, without even a scratch or a sample to be found, and utterly wordless!! I am pleasantly surprised!
Bringing together a range of styles, they mix funk, jazz, rock, hip hop, all in one bubbling cauldron of beastie madness – the deliciously seductive ‘Rat Cage’ brings on the trembling organ solos, keeping it low key and minimal – whilst ‘Dramastically Different’ is built around a luscious bass line, with wicked rhythms gradually breaking with just percussion solos before sliding back in again.
All the tracks sound really personal, because they’re not IN YOUR FACE, they sound like well articulated jams, and you can’t help but feel they’re playing right here right now, just for you. It sounds like a bit of a secret, cos obviously the Beastie Boys would never do something so highbrow and sensible as an instrumental album?! That’s right – no jokes, no comedy, no cheesy rhymes, just pure musical madness, they’ve really hit the spot. Get it GET IT!
