This is a fairly disturbing listen. It’s already crunchingly slow and heavy, and I’m only a track in, when the recording seems to start slowing down – i.e. the bpm starts gradually slowing, except so gradually you can barely tell and you think it’s a trick. Maybe it’s the drag caused by the sheer gravitational pull of the slab-like guitars.
Black Sheep Wall sound like Crowbar raping Justin Broadrick with Michael Gira’s amplifier stack. It’s bleak, black, makes you feel physically uneasy and sort of a cross between dizzy and sick. I’m not sure if the world is genuinely ready for records this hideously, ball-achingly angst-y and distorted. Perhaps the person or people behind the Black Sheep Wall didn’t get enough Christmas presents, but something’s put them in a right tizzy, and my eardrums are bearing the consequences. As a piece of music it’s nothing particularly subtle or interesting, but in terms of noise construction it’s quite effective.
I’m going to have to turn it off now – it’s just killed all the houseplants and my dog is cowering…
