Named after Mario Lemieux’s comeback to the NHL, CK have generated a loyal and dedicated fan base around the world and through word of mouth have generated quite a stir in hardcore punk circles, now they are ready to step out of the shadows and into the light, and
Symptoms and Cures may well be the record that does this.
Whilst still possessing the raw, unforgiving brutality that has made CK one the most respected and best loved bands around and has ensured that previous records such as Broadcasting and Wake The Dead remain a staple hit on many people’s playlists, S+C takes the band in a new direction and conjures up comparisons to other hardcore bands that have found success on the airwaves including the aforementioned
Cancer Bats, Set Your Goals and
Four Year Strong.
The album, produced by Eric Ratz and Kenny Luong (Billy Talent, Cancer Bats), see’s former guitarist Andrew Neufeld take lead vocal duties for the second time after original front-man Scott Wade left due to stress related issues. S+C sees Neufeld really come into his own as the talisman of the group and he leads his band of hardcore brothers almost like an orchestra’s conductor into newfound territory; this is a band that has finally come to terms with such a huge change and is finding their new sound.
Tracks such as
Crooked Floors are assured floor fillers and will have every kid in the room throwing themselves wildly at each other as Neufeld spits and shouts his way through 3 minutes of pure ferocious gold. The gang vocals on tracks such as
G.M Vincent and I and the albums self titled track will have one and all bellowing from the bottom of their lungs and right back into the speakers from which they spilled out of.
This is not only a record that see’s CK adopting a more mature and well rounded sound, but also one that still smells potently of the sheer musical force that made them champions of the scene. Next stop the big time? Just don’t call it a comeback.
