Bakc when MMM MMM MMM was released in the early 90's - the Crash Test Dummies were genuinely a thrilling, unique prospect - But, like so many other bands who come out with that one smash wonder hit - they soon disappeared from sight and sound upon release of the not-as-thrilling second single
"Afternoons and Coffeespoons" from album
GOD SHUFFLED HIS FEET.
The departure of the band from the scene was seen by the lesser informed music follower as a consequence of the huge success of THAT single, and the bands inability to wrte any other music to follow it's impact and inventiveness - ask 10 people about the band and i bet you now 8 of them will think they split up - but this is a massive misconception - The CTD's survived, and bouyed by the success of their timeless single - went on to release a further 5 albums before this release we are here for today.
Thats 7 albums in 20 years.
Not bad for a band who are still dubbed as one hit wonders - and one trick ponies...
Oooh La La sees a band who are happy and secure were their place in the world is, from Brad Roberts still haunting and brlliant Baritone Bass vocals, to the more Nick Cavey moments of pseudo country and western - to the female vocals from Ellen Reid on album closer PUT A FACE, it's a subtle, beautiful and most importantly, FUN album full of twists and turns and wonderful moments of top-class musicianship...
I still love MMM MMM MMM, but as a fan of the Album
GOD SHUFFLED HIS FEET in its entirety (i was 14 when it was released - and it provided the soundtrack to my summer) - i am glad to see the band back and revelling in the act there is no expectation, everyone who hears their name expects MMM MMM MMM - so they can do whatever they want and get away with it and revel in the freedom that predicatble audiences bring....
As an album, it is not a epoch making moment in music - but damned if it isn't fun, damned if it didn't make me smile and damned if i'm not glad they are back...
Lovely.
