Although regardless of the love in the room, Devil Sold His Soul managed to blast out all their essence in its entirety, it’s just a shame that I was only one of a few people in the room that recognised this.
Having stopped off in and around the UK for a brief tour in between festivals, DSHS have no doubt come accustomed to playing undersized venues, and this habit is something they are eagerly keen to kick.
Opening with the frighteningly energetic ‘As The Storm Unfolds’, it’s a song that contains both light and dark, and shows off DSHS to their finest. Ed Gibbs’s both haunting screams and clean vocals, throws their sound together in the finest of ways. Yes their music may sound unbelievably heavy at first, but once you come comfortable with their dominant sound, it’s then that you’ll realise their music contains so much more.
Playing their newest single from their album ‘Blessed and Cursed’, set for release next month, ‘Callous Heart’ still has Devil written all over it. Again with numerous shades of light within the song, the inspirational guitar bleeds with dedication, and both the drums and heavy riffs impact on you in such a way that you’d be a fool not to have any emotional reaction to this.
The most memorable song of the night was ‘Like It’s Your Last’, which still to this date has remained a classic. Although it may not contain the most lyrics in the world, as the majority of the song is made up of quiet riffs, constantly building up and down - It’s songs like this that show of the true beauty of the band, and their capability of being able to still hold their ground even when showcasing quiet ambient melodies.
DSHS frustratingly played to an under appreciative audience tonight, and there were a number of factors that didn’t help their sound come across as it should. Nevertheless, this can be seen as a turning point for DSHS, as with their next album they’re going to come back stronger, ready to wet our appetites with love.
