Hailing from Gothenburg, Sweden, the simply named Ef have already established quite the name for themselves. The young five piece, formed in 2003, are quickly becoming pioneers in the post-rock field. With two highly acclaimed and exceedingly well received albums and a reputation for their remarkable live shows, Ef’s third album ‘Mourning Golden Morning’ is definitely another string to their bow to be proud of. After the incredible ‘Give Me Beauty… Or Give Me Death’, it was hard to imagine a follow up album. How does a band top a tour de force such as that? Incredibly, Ef are the band that have managed to outdo themselves.
‘Mourning Golden Morning’ not only has beautiful artwork, but it is beautiful to listen to. It conjures up vivid memories of Explosions in the Sky’s masterpiece ‘The Earth is not a Cold Dead Place’, one of post-rock’s golden albums in recent years. ‘Mourning’ will sweep you off your feet and in to a delicate and otherworldly state. It is ethereal, it is intricate yet huge all at once and it is an epic f*cking journey. While it is, indeed, relaxing and completely perfect for a late night/early morning coffee and cigarettes session on your lonesome, it is also exciting and invigorating. It is actually genuinely refreshing to hear a post-rock album that captures the imagination well and truly – there is so much out there that mimics rather than creates and it gets a little tiresome, but I guess the same could be said of any genre.
Anyway, if you like post-rock in a big way, a small way or even a general apathetic way, I urge you to check this album out.
