Any female fronted upstart band falling under the branch of alternative music in the early nineties were to be compared to Hole. In the early 00’s it was The Distillers and now in the modern era they are compared to Paramore. However take one look at In This Moment’s Maria Brink and any comparisons (based on looks at least) are abolished straight away as Maria looks like she could have Miss Williams for breakfast.
‘The Dream’ is ITM’s sophomore album and mixes the heavy with the soft in a variety of ways. Intro ‘The Rabbit Hole’ takes us into the first single from the album ‘Forever’, clashing simple pop with classic rock and a slab of the heavy for good measure. ‘Lost at Sea’ keeps the adrenalin flowing and shows off Brink’s vocal huge range before ‘Into the Light’ is the typical nu-goth ballad that everyone who’s heard Evanescence could probably figure out without even listen to it.
Though a fairly obvious affair, every generation of lost girls need their heroin and they could do far worse than to listen to In This Moment and find some form of release. Clever marketing ploy or not, the songs on here are decent and it’s almost certain that the band will be revered the world over by teenage girls who are lost or alone.
There’s no doubting that In This Moment have received a lot of attention due to their vocalist, however there is, fortunately, more to this book than its cover. ‘The Dream’ captures simple, ear grabbing metal and combines it with Brink’s enticing, melodic voice to create music that the Hot Topic/MySpace generations will grasp onto and hold dear.
