Cursed

Canada’s answer to the rocket-powered sledgehammer returns with devastating results

7/10

Label: Basick Records

Those French-Canadians certainly know how to do heavy, eh? With Despised Icon throwing in the towel, the void left by them would be more than adequately filled by Ion Dissonance. Having been around just a bit longer than Despised Icon, ID have definitely paid their dues and deserve some of their friends’ popularity, especially if fourth album ‘Cursed’ is anything to go by.

After a brief but brutal title track into, the album kicks off all guns blazing with ‘You People Are Messed Up’, an impossibly fast, implausibly technical and thoroughly enjoyable foray into the band’s signature heavy/erratic blueprint. Followed without a breath to spare by the chain-gun assault of ‘The More Things Change, The More They Stay The Same’, it’s obvious from the get-go that this will be no easy ride.

This is only proved further by the perpetually shifting ‘This is the Last Time I repeat Myself’ (featuring Alex Erian of Despised Icon) and ‘No Care Ever’, before the delightfully titled ‘We Like To Call This One...Fuck Off’ slowly grates through your skull with its dark intro then thoroughly chops you in the brain with shredding guitars, venomous vocals and relentless blasting.

‘Disaster in Sight’ makes perfect use of the bands new eight-string guitar assault and by this point you might be surprised at how much melody you’ve heard within the madness. Though they definitely make use of their low-end, ID also incorporate top-string action which can be a welcome break from the sometimes Omni-present ‘brown note’.

‘They’ll Never Know’ makes full use of the band’s heavily distorted sound, including some disturbing feedback encased speech on repeat before ‘Pallor’ ends the proceedings in epic fashion, incorporating melodic vocals into the bands devastating arsenal.

Thus far, Ion Dissonance haven’t been given the full attention they deserve. However, given the current climate of heavy music and the fact that kids are looking for more and more extreme sounds, this could be their time to step out of the shadows and become a force to be reckoned with. At least then, they would be on a par with their music.

Strength comes from our bones – the knowledge that, deep down, nothing is impossible. 'Bones', the stunning new single, and album of the same name, from Young Guns, captures exactly that: it's a hymn to bravery and boldness, the defining statement so far from one of our finest bands.
