I admit, in my drunken stupidity I had managed to mix this lot up with the Brian Jonestown Massacre – the band who made themselves look rather outrageous in comparison with their former friends in the Dandy Warhols in the acclaimed movie “DiG” – obviously because of the cultish references in their names. Once the bugger was on me stereo, though, my mistake became transparently apparent.
The Jim Jones Revue perhaps aren’t making the cultish reference you might expect though; their frontman is actually called Jim Jones. He also used to front a band called Thee Hypnotics who I recall as being a pretty excellent retro-rock band in the vein of a slightly more hard-edged Black Crowes. And he’s put out a rather good album here.
“Burning Your House Down” isn’t going to win any awards for starting new genres; this is all good old lo-fi rock ‘n’ blues, kind of like the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with a better vocalist and without the same inherent sense of its own importance. Basically, it’s on a simple mission to take you by the seat of your pants and rock you til you can’t go on. At least most of the time, it succeeds.
