The funkiest white man on earth meets an Afrobeat legend to stunning effect
I was fortunate enough to review a copy of Jimi Tenor’s last album with his band Kabu Kabu from earlier this year. I say fortunate, as it quite frankly brought the funk in a way rarely witnessed on any record released since the mid ‘70’s and without George Clinton’s involvement. I mean, it brought the muthafunking FUNK, if you see what I’m saying.
Whether this album sticks quite as hard to the inside of my poor fevered brain is yet to be seen, but what is beyond dispute is Tenor’s ability to first bring the funk (as previously noted) and second to choose extremely well-suited collaborators. For this outing, the Finnish multi-instrumentalist has brought the Afrobeat drumming legend Tony Allen.
Various members of Kabu Kabu have also contributed here, and the overall musical mixture is not dissimilar to what we heard on “4th Dimension”ť, which is to say that it’s Afrobeat-flavoured psychedelic funk of the very highest quality. Few outfits indeed are coming close to doing this kind of music so well these days ”‘ any funkateer worth their salt should make purchasing this a priority.
