Joe Coffee are not a band who have previously invaded my consciousness, but Hot Water Music are, and on first impressions, JC seem to have taken a fair bit of inspiration from the work of that particular band – not that they’re a straight copy, but they certainly have quite a lot in common, particularly with respect to the lead vocals. Then again, if you’re going to take after another band, there are a lot worse out there.
To be fair to them, perhaps the anthemic feel of some of their songs owes as much to Rancid or the Bouncing Souls as HWM – they certainly aren’t as discordant as you might expect a direct descendent of the ‘Music to be. They might not quite belong in the same category as those bands yet, but to use a racing term they’re certainly coming up fast on the inside.
These days it’s harder and harder for punk bands to distinguish themselves from the amorphous masses. Joe Coffee might not be there yet – but they’re certainly going the right way about it. ‘When The Fabric…’ isn’t, you feel, the end of the story.
