Bands should take note that sometimes, presentation can get you a long way. If Kollwitz’s debut album were presented to someone on a CD-R, scrawled on in permanent marker, it might not get a second look. However come forth with an embossed, bronze printed, hand numbered, heavy card digipack with four card inserts and awesome artwork on both case and CD, you’re much more likely to get the attention you may very well deserve.
And, as luck would have it, Kollwitz are definitely deserved of this attention. Forming in 2006 and having been in bands previous to this, the members of Kollwitz clearly know what they’re doing and this is highly apparent in the carefully crafted corridors of the eight songs that make up ‘Like Iron I Rust’. From howling distortion to soaring melody, this hour-long journey takes us from the highest highs to the lowest lows in devastating fashion.
With songs ranging from three minutes to five times that length, ‘Like Iron I Rust’ manages to captivate its audience by adding variety to its landscape. The echoing melodies collide with the crushing thud of the bass and power of the drums and the frost-bitten surroundings are interspersed with feelings of warmth and optimism.
The final, fifteen-minute plus title track reaches an epically striking climax. Bathed in strings and screams, it’s as hopeful as it is devastating. ‘Like Iron I Rust’ is an intrinsically crafted piece of art, from the nigh-on perfect packaging to the breathtaking music contained within, Kollwitz have produced a remarkable debut that will hopefully lead to more of the same in the future.
