Any regular readers of my scrawlings on this very website will by now be well aware that I hold Les Savy Fav in exceedingly high regard; and any regular reader of other rock media sources will likely be aware that I’m far from alone in that position. As such, it’s with some enthusiasm that I discovered that the next few weeks will be busy for the Brooklyn art rockers, with a single (‘Patty Lee’) from 2007’s awesome ‘Let’s Stay Friends’ opus, a new UK date and the reissue of this rather spiffing album.
Rather than a new studio effort – which on their current form would possibly be so exciting I would have little alternative but to cack myself forthwith – ‘Inches’ is a singles compilation. But as with so many aspects of LSFs’ work, that doesn’t mean the sloppy, half-arsed effort that most bands would put out in order to tick another record off their contract; instead, ‘Inches’ is a first-class opus in its own right. The 18 tracks on this disc comprise no less than nine singles originally issued on eight different labels, plus the flexi they did for Chunklet magazine; as such it represents something of a lifesaver for collectors who might not have the money or time to track down the originals.
By its very nature, ‘Inches’ couldn’t work as smoothly as a regular record; for one thing, these tracks span several years of the bands history – yet every track is as well-crafted and intelligent as any of their more familiar songs. If you’re a fan, it’s absolutely not to be missed. Though if you’re a fan, you should also ensure that whatever you need to do – kill, steal, whore yourself – you get yourself a ticket for their Astoria show on the 10th February. It will rock your gametes into another dimension – I guarantee!
