One is DJ, producer and remixer Eddie Temple Morris, the other is the former guitarist of nineties rockers The Cooper Temple Clause. Together they are electronic dance act The Losers. The Prodigy’s Liam Howlett has called this album ‘f***ing banging’ while Rob and Gareth from Pendulum proclaim that ‘this is the kind of music we want to make!’
Mixing laid back techno with trip hop, electro, grime, house and electronica; Beautiful Losers is an exciting debut that is unafraid to experiment and bend genres. Opener Three Colours is an ambient mix of Aphex Twin and Massive Attack while No Man is an Island, Talk to the Hand and Nothing Will Die rocks out like Soulwax Nite Versions. Flush is a dark and grimey rap battle between a boy and girl that reminded me of Dan Le Sac vs Scroobius Pip for its sharp wit and humour. There’s a subtle reference to Wayne’s World on the uplifting Josh Wink-esque Never Meant to Be and Brian Molko’s guest vocals on the moody cover of Jane’s Addiction’s Summertime Rolls is brooding and beautiful.
Weaved together with filthy and twisted electro, acid rave, tripped out ambience, funked up disco and lots of infectious beats and bleeps; Beautiful Losers is a charismatic debut .
