The term performance art – scares me.Coming from a background full to overflowing with Drama and theatre training, and with extensive time served as a company member in several theatre companies the length and breadth of the UK, as well as the USA, whenever someone says Performance Art – I automatically think – PRETENCIOUS WANKERS.
It’s a knee jerk reaction I will readily admit, but more often than not, it is a wholly justified reaction – as it is a school of acting that is full of overblown, egotistical wankers. That is acting of course - In musical terms – it can mean something altogether more horrible.
Lucky Dragons skirt a very fine line between quirky pop charm and pretentious performance art wank… sometimes it is s line they skirt to close to be likeable or comfortable, but others there are moments of majestical genius..It is just hard pushed to find whether there are more moments of one of the other.
As an experiment in patience, it is brilliant, but as a legitimate release intended to keep interest and repeat listen, it is sorely lacking.
A curious folly then…But well worth a solo listen and see if anything sticks.
