Melopomeni

Genepool Records

6/10

Dark, Attacking Singer-Songwriter with a vengeful agenda and belly full of bile... Great Time Had By All.

If it's rue that everyone on Earth has a twin - a double - a Doppleganger who is the exact same but exact opposite, then Melpomeni is the darker than dark Id of the artist Imogen Heap... Where Imogen is Warm and pixie-like, Melpomeni is a tricksy, cold calculating gremlin... Her voice is as strong, is as spellbinding... But it has an undercurrent, an edge, a... STAB... to it.

Nick Cave could well be the darker Id of David Bowie, Tom Waits the darker Id of Screamin' Jay Hawkins - It works with all shades and genres of music - here, we have the perfect example of the darker, more twisted, more helpless side of the coin...

The songs themselves are awesome, a times coming across like creeping moments of torment, at other times they scream with brilliance and moments of bloody mayhem... Melpomeni cascading inside your innards, ripping you to death inside out...

Songs like DREAMING is a fairytale gone wrong - full of bitter nursery rhyme moments, and vocals like a wailing banshee madwoman... I'M ON FIRE - shares a lot in common with the PJ HArvey loud-quiet-loud-quiet moments of songwriting, and bursts of lyrical madness...

This is an album that could garner a hell of a lot of critical pladits for the Australian Singer-Songwriter - her persona drenches every song on the album... and by the last track you are beaten, bloodied and worn out...

Emotionally drained and loving every single second...

Invest in something different and you could be pleasantly surprised by the conundrum this woman is... Lyrical storytelling and fun as hell...

But beware... It contains bite...

And when it sinks its teeth in... It very rarely lets go...
