Endlessly hummable ditties on the theme of murder, depravity and mutilation, fronted by Alice Cooper’s stab-happy little brother… it can only be the return of everyone’s favourite horror-fixated nutjobs, Murderdolls. Much to our twisted delight the gruesome twosome (sorry) are back with better tunes, a gritty, fleshed out production job from Zeuss (Hatebreed, The Red Chord, All That Remains) and enough lyrical schlock to get Mary Whitehouse vomiting in her grave.
While their debut record ‘Beyond The Valley Of The Murderdolls’ was largely comprised of material from Wednesday 13’s previous bands, ‘Women And Children Last’ sees Wednesday and the multitalented Joey Jordinson really getting into stride, with a load of sleazy shock-rock meets horror punk riffs (see ‘Death Valley Superstars’, ‘Homicide Drive’) and the kind of catchy choruses that you really don’t want to be heard singing on the tube. The tongue-firmly-in-cheek, campy hammer horror feel is as overt as ever, like a youthful Motley Crue on a drug fuelled excursion to hell (incidentally, Mick Mars of Motley makes appearances on a couple of tracks), and as such reaction will likely be just as polarised as it was to their debut. There are certainly issues with musical and tonal repetition, and a couple of tracks could be considered filler, but most importantly this is a ridiculously fun listen, with the thrill of a slightly shonky horror and all the best rock ‘n’ roll. It won’t set the world alight, but it will make you smile, motherfucker.
