No matter what genre of music you like, there will always be some record labels that you deem worthy of showing a little more interest in. In terms of punk/hardcore releases in recent times Deathwish has put out releases from some of the genres most exciting acts in years including the likes of Give Up The Ghost, Modern Life Is War and This Is Hell.
This particular release intriguingly titled ‘Paranoid Delusions/Paradise Illusions’ comes from Baltimore’s Pulling Teeth. This is the follow up to the acclaimed, if somewhat overlooked full length ‘Martyr Immortal’ and despite being only five tracks in length there’s enough on offer here to get excited about. The album starts off with ‘Ritual’ initially a slow building doom laden affair that eventually breaks into a full on Slayer-go-hardcore assault on the senses. It should be horrible, but somehow it’s enthralling and fantastic.
What Pulling Teeth seem have to succeeded in doing here is keep the integrity (pun intended hardcore fans) to their music and yet add a whole new dimension. ‘Bloodwolves’ starts fast and furious and eventually slows, becoming more thought out and paced. It all works, and brilliantly so. The only gripe here is the greed to hear more from a band clearly inspired. This album is heavy, but in the best possible way, rather than a blink and you’ll miss it indistinguishable thrash-athon, we’ve got a record that might just be making hardcore truly exciting again.
