The world of Metal seems to be suffering the most in these economically harsh times. Whether it be the labels who were already facing an uphill struggle; pushing a style of music still ignored by mainstream media (unless you’re one of the few metal bands who transcend their genre tag like Mastodon), Major label funded metal labels still finding the need to release rip-off multi-formatted albums (Roadrunner), not to mention local council’s up and down the country trying to ban live music. With many of metal’s larger bands having released sub-par efforts in ‘08, we really need to turn to the wealth of emerging talent, and without sounding like some idiotic BNP fan, perhaps it’s about time we supported the local brilliance dotting up all over the country to get us out of the quagmire. Having already dazzled us with Cinders Fall, Transcend Records continue their roster of supremely talented up n comers with the rather superb Metalcore
Having already built up a loyal fan base with their debut EP ‘Revenge Is Personal’ (and simultaneously winning me over) the band’s intent is impossible to ignore on ‘The Ruin Of Man’, they’re really aiming for the skies… And boy, do they start things perfectly. The stabbing riffage and crushing breakdowns witnessed on ‘The End’ is the perfect statement of intent, the band playing to their strengths and giving a tired genre a brand new lease on life. What sets the band apart is their fusing of Old and New styles; One moment it’s bone crushing, death-metal influenced break downs, the next it’s the commanding and powerful delivery with an edge of 80’s Thrash, then those melodies finish everything off and you realise just quite how impressive it is, a UK band taking on the yanks at their own game. With some amazing drumming, guitar licks that could kill and a vocalist who sounds somewhere between James Hetfield & a more melodic Rob Zombie, it’s a mouth watering package. The songs are as imaginative, perfectly performed and spirited as the best moments from Bullets For My Valentine, without the smug arrogance or mainstream luring eye candy of Mr Tuck being thrust down your throat. Check them out on tour too…
