Franco-Prussian electro duo
Stereo Total have been about on the continent for a fair bit of time but have so far yet to make a dent in Blightly, but could ‘Baby Ouh!’ be the album that changes this?
Probably not, one of the biggest things hampering their path to success in Britain is that their music is almost entirely sung in German and French meaning most of the subleties of the lyrics were lost on this reviewer. This album isn’t without its charms though, the lively opening track ‘Hallo Damenklo’ is as ramshackle as electro pop gets, ‘Elles Te Bottent, Mes Bottles?’ brings to mind the work of early electro pioneers like the Silicon Youth and the whistling on ‘Tour de France’ is so wacky it’s hard not to like. The rest of the album swings between being fun and kitsch and dull and innocuous.
To take Stereo Total’s music with anything but a large pinch of salt would be to do them a disservice. On first listen this album does tend to grate a fair bit but the lo-fi sound, silly lyrics, charity shop instruments are obviously deliberate and have a certain charm.
