Essex producer, remixer and DJ team The Count and Sinden aka Joshua Harvey and Graeme Sinden are one of the coolest outfits around on the dance scene. Alongside the likes of Aeroplane and Fake Blood; they have proved themselves to be one of the most innovative and experimental dance acts on the circuit today.
I first came across the duo at one of their many DJ sets in London a few years back. There they pretty much ticked every box genre wise and had me hooked. Their new rave mix of single Tamborzuda and bass line anthem Beeper were big favourites of mine, so I was looking forward to what they had to offer for their debut. The two previous singles I had known them from were completely different from eachother and this very much reflected what I heard on Mega Mega Mega.
Grimy opener Do You Really Want It featuring American rapper Trackademicks has attitude and bite but may not have been the best opener as it’s the later tracks that really the pack the punch on here. And second song in I hear one of those examples in the shape of funked up disco number After Dark; which also features the Mystery Jets. I was actually so surprised to hear the Mystery Jets sounding so animated and I hope that they collaborate with the boys again.
Desert Rhythm, Roll Out (featuring 77Klash), Panther and Llamame(featuring Coolio Iglesias) provide the much needed Carnival vibe with latin funk mixed with electro a la Diplo, MIA and Bassment Jaxx. Hold Me featuring rising UK star Katy B is my standout track as her demure vocals work perfectly over the mix of electro, bass-line and dubstep. This is the track that would get me on the dancefloor as Katy’s lyrics give it a ragga and dancehall type edge that makes me literally just want to shake my behind! Title track Mega is another standout, mixing filthy electro and techno with some afro beats; whilst Addicted to You featuring the serene voice of grime king Bashy is an infectious combination of bassline, electro and even more latin beats.
The Count and Sinden's first effort is a forward thinking dance album that stays away from convention and breaks down boundaries by combining house and electro with urban rhythms and disco funk. If you love your music with quirky collaborations, then this is for you.
