"You've got a great car, hey what's wrong it today, I used to have one too, maybe I'll come and have a look".... Possibly the most sung-along to song in 2001. I think people need to learn there is more than The Dandy Warhols than "Bohemian Like You". Yes, it was a great, catchy tune but there is more them to repetitive "I like you's" sung in between the pub and the kebab shop. If you http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61GdHa544AL._SS500_.jpglook further in to their back catalogue that is. Sadly, I am not sure what to make of 'Earth to The Dandy Warhols and this is a great disappointment to me. At times I thought I was listening to a weakened Chk Chk Chk or a dated Duran Duran. I'm not sure if it's arrogance or confidence or whether it's okay to try and distinguish between to the two, but The Warhols seem more self assured than ever, skitting from Vegas style boogie, to funk, to stadium fillers - which is unfortunately what we are met with immediately with try-hard opening track 'The World People Come Together (Come On)'.
Basically, this all seems like too much thought has gone in to trying to be thoughtless for a lot of it. I think maybe somewhere along the lines The Dandy Warhols decided it was cool to ramble on about cosmic energy, tried to re-inspire boogie whilst at the same time being, ahem, too cool for school. But then they forgot to send the memo to the rest of the world and we're all left a bit, well, puzzled. See, this isn't a bad album, per se, just a little confusing and self indulgent and after 'Odditorium...' it's a bit too much like de ja vu. I will admit, however, to liking 'Wasp In The Lotus'. I have no idea what it's about and I am almost certain that I'm not meant to, but it's more recognisable as a Warhols song, (which, by the way Mr.Taylor-Taylor, is no bad thing), and leads nicely in to another good song - 'Dreamt of Yes' another less-boogie-and-more-psychedelic-rock song. Thankfully, there are quite a few more good songs and, okay, maybe I'm being a bit harsh, I just really like a lot of The Dandy Warhols old music. I think the best way to sum this up is that the boogie stuff is bad, the rest strays from being okay to being really enjoyable. I think this is an album I will end up flicking through to get to the good stuff, and never listening to some of the other songs again, but it is, at least, worthy of more than just a singular listen. It's just a shame that a lot of the time the best bits are drowned out by seemingly random noises or too-fuzzy sounding lyrics.
