After the intro, the cockney than thou Tricky Micky – whose name alone makes him sound like a second hand car dealer from Walford – samples the 80’s tune of the same name ‘Hey Micky’ – obviously – and chopping it into a slice of cheeky chappy brit-rap as it bounces around your head. Although not all of his tracks are as obvious as this. There’s still some lairiness and hilarity throughout, some of it in the vein of a low budget The Streets, but there’s more to it than that.
‘You Want Some’ sounds like quite a high budget dance but lairy affair. Initially, at least, Tricky Micky seems to be somewhere between Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip and Goldie Looking Chain. It’s a mixture of taking the piss and high humoured satire particularly in the pretty funny skits.
But there’s no denying that Micky knows his rapping skills, particularly on the brilliant ‘Explain That.’ In fact Example is possibly a little bit jealous as this is possibly what he trying to aim for on his debut album, before releasing his recent more dance oriented affair. As there are some chunky dance beats behind the cheeky yet pretty hilarious, and skilful raps. But its hard to tell whether Micky want to take himself seriously or not or just wants to give UK rap a sense of humour. As there’s an emotional ore to some tracks like on ‘Wasting Time’ and on ‘Hot and Cold’ with windswept strings and everything, which both seem to deal with vulnerability and a longing for someone else. In fact some of the tracks could put some of the ‘serious’ raps acts to shame.
Although Micky does play the lads lad on tracks such as ‘Lads Anthem’- which seems to be the missing link between De La Soul and 2 Live Crew, with a Jungle Brothers style chunky beat too it – and the record label is also called Lads Rap, he even describes his own music as lad rap - its quite a serious album and skilful and there’s intelligence in the music and the rhymes.
So aside from the dodgy front cover and artwork maybe more people should give Tricky Micky a chance and take this album seriously too. So don’t let the cockney accent put you off. This guy is serious and seriously good.
