Function Records is home to various interesting and diverse signings, and they have put together a selection of the best onto a sampler. As with anything new, it's important too impressive straight away, and doing just that is Lebatol who kick things off nicely with the brilliant Disappear Here, which is kind of reminiscent of The Pixies reimagining Anarchy In The UK. Next up is Escanna with Quiet As A House, a less refined but equally energetic affair, followed by the wonderfully quirky Beef Jerky (please excuse the bingo-calleresque rhyming there) which signals a brief change in pace and tone with it's breathy vocal and jaunty rhythm. Controlled Explosion by Push To Fire does exactly what it says on the bashed in tin, whilst Lock In At The Minquiers sees Bulletproof excitedly shouting about a lock in at an establishment seemingly called The Minquiers, and Nights Of The Stiletto by ...Demons gets proceedings back to the road most trodden by this sampler, namely dark, brooding raucosity (please don't look that up). Brandy Bars by ...For Trucks offers a glimpse into what it might sound like if there were to be a 'Tom Waits only' karaoke night at a truck stop, and shouty shouty punk boys SR-O polish things off with Inside, a song about being rather angry about something or other, possibly having stay inside when it's raining. Possibly.
Though, as mentioned, broody rock emerges as the main theme to Function's agenda, there are enough interesting diversions from that rule on display here to mark out Function and their acts as a diverse and interesting bunch, deserving of some attention. Give a little.
