Ok, so we scream about great new bands every week, but this one will genuinely spark a whole heap of excitement – subba quizzes the gawd darn brilliant Prizzy Prizzy Please!
Bloomington-bred, Chicago-based anomalous rockers Prizzy Prizzy Please have announced an ambitious tour in support of the upcoming album "Chroma Cannon". The band's new LP “Chroma Cannon” is out now on LP, CD, Digital, and limited edition Cassette. All physical formats are now available for pre-order direct from the Joyful Noise site here http://www.joyfulnoiserecordings.com/catalog/jnr47. We spoke to the band's drummer...
How are you? Where does this Q&A find you?
I am good. This interrogation finds me on my throne beside my desk here at the Futility Factory in Chicago Illinois.
How did the recording sessions for your new release go?
The recording process was insane. We recorded seven of the songs, mixed all 13 of the songs, and mastered the entire album in 6 days. Six days may seem like a long time, but it was a pain in the ass for us -- because we are a pack of bastards in the studio. We are always humbled and frustrated, getting the first intimate listen at how many mistakes we make (playing our own damned songs). Luckily Mike Bridavsky can polish a shitty turd into genuine reflective metal on very little time and very strong coffee.
What goals did you set yourself before you started recording? Did you do anything differently this time, on purpose? why?
We've always loved writing and recording songs that are of all different genres, paying homage to the inspirations both compositionally and sonically. It's the organic result of our being four independent dudes, each entirely different from the other. We didn't want to unnaturally strip the eccentricity from our songwriting, but during the recording of this album we were more focused than ever on getting our songs into a tonal uniform.
What do you feel are your own limitations when it comes to creating/writing music?
Sometimes we get fucked by our own collective split personality. Our inspirations for songwriting are always absurd and childish bullshit, but as soon as we start composing music for these moronic themes everybody turns scholar and nit-picks every musical detail. Sometimes we plow through a composition, and everybody's stoked...but other times the concept just deflates -- i.e. our inability to finish composing music for "Rumble-ocracy," a song about an island colony of exiled professional wrestlers that resolve public policy disputes by means of royal rumble.
Tell us 3 of your favourite songs from your career and the inspiration behind them?
My favorite 3 songs? Flea Bomb, Air Splits, Too Many Tee Shirts. They are all written about our personal experiences.
-"Flea Bomb" is Mark's bluesy rant about his friend Adam Kornya bringing a flea infestation from his shitty house over to Mark's not-as-shitty house. True story.
-"Air Splits" is the story of us staying in a circus group's practice space in Burlington, Vermont. We showed up at after midnight with a mini-keg of brew at 'The Bakery' (the name of this space - which, btw, was inside of a professional building full of dentist's offices). An indiscreet windowless door was all that separated the complete madness in The Bakery from the sterile hallways of this freaking dental office building. And we weren't allowed to go out into the hallway after 8 am, unless we looked "real respectable," by instruction from our buddy Lee who rented the space and was leaving for the night. But of course, the bathroom was in the hallway...so Mark walked out of The Bakery to take a whiz at like 7:30 or so (we were still polishing off that mini-keg with our buddies in The Mathematicians, watching this crazy circus lady dangle from the ceiling on a velvet rope. She was
doing the splits in the air, hence the song title...) Anyways, to make a long story short... Mark's phone rang shortly after he got back from his piss, and Lee was on the line saying that he was gonna be evicted if we didn't do exactly what he said : sneak out of the second story window and get the hell out of there, because he told his landlord that he knew nothing about our presence in the space, and that we must have broken in. Luckily we were able to sneak out of the building and peel out just before the cops arrived. Unluckily, we had NO sleep and were riding dirty around Burlington at 8 am, drunk and without anywhere to go.
-"Too Many Tee Shirts" is an homage to our friend Aaron Waltke, who broke the Guinness Book world record for most tee shirts worn by one human at one time. Aaron wore 160 shirts, which was almost one hundred pounds of fabric. True story.
What do you love and what do you hate about life on the road? Tell us your funniest tour experience yet?
Touring is great sometimes. Other times... (see the story above...)
What are the bands plans for the rest of the year? What exactly do you want to achieve with your band, now and in the future?
On 4/20 we are releasing this new record of ours, "Chroma Cannon". We will tour the US of A in May, June, and July. Hopefully by then, we will be billionaires able to enact our plans to turn our shitty house on the North side of the Windy City into the very first Chicago Space Needle.
How would you describe your own/bands sound, or what do you hate being labelled as?
Guitarless shred-pop?
Who is currently moving you musically at the moment?
I've been spinning the shit out of my dad's old Booker T and the MG's albums. I love the Stax band's sound, with Duck Dunn's thumping bass lines. Plus Booker T was a Bloomington cat in those days.
What album changed your life and why?
Lots of albums change my life, all the time. BUT...I've probably been most affected by "Stop Making Sense" by the Talking Heads. My Dad taped it off of TV onto his Betamax machine when I was a little
toddler. After that fatal error on his part, I'd make him put it on like every freaking night. It used to get me so pumped! When I finally grew up and was able to operate the VCR on my own, I remember
having to fast forward through the Scorcese movie "After Hours" to get to the Talking Heads. And after Stop Making Sense, several episodes of "I, Claudius" were on the tape. I don't know what that has to do with anything...
If you could erase one single/album from history (your own or someoneelse's) which would it be and why?
Master P's "Ghetto D". He showed everybody how to make successful hip hop records, even if you have no talent and no taste.
The revolution comes, who would you like to be first against the wall (and if you're feeling particularly bitchy, a second, third, fourth and so on...)?
The current Pope, Benedict or whatever. That guy looks like he can terminate life with his black stare.
Best piece of advice you'd give to aspiring musicians, or the best piece of advice you were given when you started?
I was given no advice when I started, and I really wish that somebody would have. The only advice that anyone should take from me, EVER, is - find someone who you actually know and have a better reason to trust, and get their advice.
