Brit-com romp-a-thon through a wintry landscape delivers laughs aplenty
Just when I thought the mockumentary had had its day, along came another excellent example to demonstrate that, given a suitably original premise, there is plenty of life, and laughter, in the old dog yet. And “Beyond The Pole” certainly has an original enough premise.
Starring Rhys “one-time-Fast-Show-stooge / star-of-Bellamy’s-People” Thomas and Stephen “Adrian Mole / Guy (Green Wing) Secretan” Mangan, “Beyond The Pole” is, rather cleverly, the tale of the first vegetarian, organic and carbon neutral attempt to reach the North Pole. Unfortunately, they’re not the only ones trying, and their Norwegian competitors have considerable advantage in terms of experience.
With more than a few classic moments, an inventive plot and the pleasingly-old-school theme of British temerity against the odds within an exploration scenario, “Beyond The Pole” might not be a classic, but it’s one of the funniest British films of the year so far. With a knowing wink at the likes of posh-boy TV adventure shows like the one with Ben “Gitstick” Fogle and the other git, there’s plenty here to enjoy, and a nice twist at the end to boot. Check it!
