U2 Would Struggle As A New Band & Why Record Labels Are Lazy

When you’re invited to speak with an artist whose career boasts more achievements than you ever thought possible it becomes very difficult to know where to start.

It doesn’t make it any less daunting when the artist's CV lists being the co-writer and producer for the second highest selling single in UK history (“Do they know it’s Christmas?”), was the lead singer of Ultravox, along with an extensive and highly successful solo career.

If you still haven’t guessed, I am of course referring to Midge Ure. I was invited to speak with Midge while he was rehearsing for his part in a Vintage TV program.

Walking through the back corridors of Islington’s Assembly Rooms trying to find a quiet place to record our chat I started to feel wholly unprepared.

It’s not only difficult to know where to start but it’s also tricky to remember the various bands Midge has been a vital part of… Silk, Thin Lizzy, Rich Kids, Visage along with the aforementioned.

So while stumbling through my opening intro, trying to remember all the questions I’d thought to ask and hoping Midge wasn’t too upset by our chosen location for the interview (next to the bins) I went straight in at the deep end.

“During the last 40 years how have things changed for bands?”… genius right?? What was one of the broadest openings to an interview took us down a very interesting path including; why U2 wouldn’t make it as an up and coming band in the present, why it’s so important not to give music away for free and also why record labels are being lazy.

To be honest, after instantly regretting asking the first question I then become aware as to why Midge Ure is such a legend.

He doesn’t need to pussyfoot around delicate topics and avoid answering questions about the influencers in the industry. He tells it like he sees it and with his level of experience in the music industry you rarely dispute such educated responses.

So here it is, my chat with Midge Ure… I really hope I get the opportunity to do it again, there is so much more I’d like to ask him.
