Carl Barat and The Jackals Continue Their Development At XOYO

XOYO was the venue for the second show for Carl Barât's new band, The Jackals.

As has been widely publicised, Barat handpicked recruits for his new band after receiving over 1,000 applications to a message he sent out on Facebook back in January. The band opened with 'Victory Gin', the first song the members - guitarist Billy Tessio, bassist Adam Claxton and drummer Jay Bone - had to learn in twenty minutes during auditions for the band. They then played another new track, 'Storm Is Coming'. Nerves made for a slow and untidy start; perhaps understandable as this was the biggest gig to date for the majority of the band. Any anxiety that might have been lingering around the venue was not eased by the five-minute break that followed, enabling Barat to carry out some running repairs to his guitar. It left you worrying that this gig could one to forget.
However, a quick delve into Barat's extensive back catalogue made life much more acceptable. Notable highlights were Dirty Pretty Things' 'Deadwood', and the title track from The Libertines’ 'Up The Bracket' album. The gig won't live long in the memory, but it was nice to see such enthusiasm onstage from Carl Barat and The Jackal's – something the audience fed off as the gig went on. The group are currently putting the finishing touches to their yet to be title debut album, produced by Joby J. Ford (The Bronx), which is set for release in September. Up next for Barat? A massive Libertines payday in Hyde Park, whilst simultaneously preparing to become a father for the second time. He's also bagged himself the lead role in a French film. Sacre bleu.
